In 2004 I went looking for a little girl Chihuahua. I found one at a breeder’s home in Liberty, Mo.
It was a rather cold day with snow still on the ground. When I arrived, the breeder led me around behind her home where she had a walk out basement.
There, lined along the side of the drive were several plastic kennels stacked 3 and 4 high, one on top of another.
She opened a cage on the bottom row of cages and inside were two Chi pups, one very small black and tan little girl, the one I came to see and one larger mottled brown female. She told me they were sisters. I could not help but notice they were shivering and wet. The snow on the ground had blown into their cage and they seemed to be very cold.
I made a deal to buy the smaller of the two but as I walked away I heard the ‘big sister’ pitifully whining and crying .. then the black and tan that I held did the same thing.
I did not know how long big sister would be able to stand the snow and temperatures, so… you guessed it. I came home with two girls instead of one.
My husband was less than thrilled. But when I explained the circumstances he understood.
We named the little black and tan “Gypsy” and the larger one “Peach’s” Peach’s grew to be quite the little substitute mother to Gypsy, cleaning her, protecting her. They continued to stick by each other as they do to this day.
Now 10 years old they have NEVER known a cold day or snow covered bed since coming home. We love them dearly.
I have 5 Chi’s in all and we both love them all. I am enclosing a photo of Gypsy and Peach’s.

Alma, I can totally understand you getting both little girls! I am sure you have given them a great forever home. When I went to get my first chi, I had no idea what I was walking into. The woman I got him from was a breeder and also ran a chihuahua rescue. I have NEVER seen so many chihuahuas in one place! She had about 15-20 kennels outside that had 20 or more chis in each kennel. The kennels were kept clean with shavings on the ground that looked fresh. Each kennel had a small "house" that was raised up off the ground with a ramp leading to it so they could get out of the elements; fortunately, we don't get a lot of snow here. These kennels contained all adult dogs; many of them rescues. Then she had a couple of buildings housing puppies of various ages. I didn't get to go inside those buildings, so I don't know how many puppies there were inside or what their living conditions were. She also had probably 25+ crates inside the house which each contained at least one puppy; some contained Mom and puppies. The crates were stacked one on top of another about 4 or 5 high, but they were the kind of crates with a solid bottom so nothing from the top crates could leak down onto the dog below. I told her I was looking for a male puppy, and she brought out 3 or 4 for me to choose from. I narrowed it down to 2 - one was a reddish color and had heterochromia - 1 blue eye and one brown eye. The other was tri-color. I've always loved calico cats, which are of course tri-color. I couldn't resist him; he was a shy little guy. I took my little tri-color boy home and named him Keltie. His story has been featured here on Cathy's page. I had him for 15 wonderful years.
