Meet the Newest Member of My Fur Family

Have you ever heard of a Sugar Glider? I had but to tell you the truth, in the past I thought they were some kind of lizard. I have no idea why I thought that.

This is Jazzy. She is my first Sugar Glider. I will be getting her little sister too in a few months when she is ready to leave her momma. For now, she has a temporary roommate named Sapphire (or Saphy as we call her) until her sister moves in. Then I will have to return Saphy  back to her human mommy which will be hard, as I have already fallen in love with her too.

How I Met My First Sugar Gliders

About a month ago, I visited my friend  Margaret’s  house. She raises sugar gliders and has a whole room set aside just for them. I got to go in and play with them and fell in love with the little cuties. It’s hard not to with their big eyes, pointy nose and huge personalities. They are just so freaking cute. They kind of remind me of really tiny Chihuahuas. LOL.

Most people think they are rodents, like a flying squirrel. Actually, they are marsupials. They carry their babies in a pouch like a kangaroo does. And they glide from tree to tree like a flying squirrel does.

The Things I Love About Sugar Gliders:

• They are smart, about as smart as a dog.
• They live 12-15 years.
• They develop a strong bond with their humans.
• They are relatively clean.
• They are fun to play with.
• They are so adorable.

Things Not So Great About Sugar Gliders:

• There is a smell. It’s not bad and now that I’m used to it, I actually like it.
• You have to prepare their food and add special vitamins and calcium to it. This isn’t as bad as it sounds. I prepare a month’s worth of food for them at a time and freeze it in ice cube trays.
• They do like eating live insects. I feed mine crickets and meal worms. Kind of yucky but it doesn’t bother me.
• You have to have at least 2 at a time as they are colony animals and get depressed if they don’t have a cage mate.
• They are not easy to keep as a hamster or gerbil would be. You do need to educate yourself about them before getting one.

My son and I both love these little girls and spend hours with them sitting on our shoulders or just playing with them or watching them play together. The dogs pretty much ignore them now though they were curious about them when they first moved in.

I would definitely say do some research and learn what you can about them before you get one. They aren’t for everyone. But they are definitely for me!
