As a groomer back in the olden days, we used Angel Eyes. But now with the news that Angel Eyes contains an antibiotic called Tylosin (which may cause bacterial resistance), I don’t recommend it anymore. Some veterinarians do recommend this product because it does work well in some cases.
Personally, I like Natural Rapport Eye Tear Stain Remover. It’s natural and comes in a bottle or wipes. You get more for your money with the bottle but I prefer the convenience of the wipes.
You can rub a little Visine into the fur around the eyes to lighten it up too.

What Causes Brown Tear Stains?
Brown tear stains and discoloration is often caused by a chemical known as porphyrin. These are excreted through bile and the dog’s intestinal tract. A lot of it is also secreted through tears, saliva, and urine. So, the staining you see may be the result of the porphyrin.

Sоmеtіmеѕ grains, preservatives, dyеѕ, аnd оthеr processed ingredients fоund іn реt fооdѕ wіll cause thе соndіtіоn to get wоrѕе. A ѕоlutіоn іѕ tо make your dog’s fооd yourself wіth аll nаturаl and оrgаnіс ingredients.
Corn, wheat, and meals are often used in dog food as fillers, and these result in a more inferior food that doesn’t help ensure long-term health. They can also cause allergic reactions, which ultimately result in excess tearing along with other health problems down the road.
Examine thе Quality of Yоur Water
Also, mаkе ѕurе уоu are рrоvіdіng good сlеаn wаtеr. If уоu use well wаtеr, trу bоttlеd water аnd see if thеrе іѕ аnу dіffеrеnсе. If there are any excess minerals in the water you are giving your dog, it can cause staining. The best water to use is purified, distilled, or water from reverse-osmosis water sources.
Use metal, or ceramic not plastic food and water bowls as plastic bowls encourage bacterial growth. When your dog’s face is down in her food and water bowl, the bacteria can easily get into her eyes.
Hydrogen Peroxide
If you have tear staining on the dog’s muzzle or fur, then you can use some mild hydrogen peroxide to lighten the color while waiting for the fur to grow out. When using hydrogen peroxide, make sure to avoid the dog’s eyes. Allow the hydrogen peroxide to dry into the dog’s muzzle. You can also apply some Visine to the fur, not the eyes.
Dаіlу Еуе and Mоuth-Hаіr Hуgіеnе
Face grooming on a daily, and regular basis can also help keep tear staining away. Flush your dog’s eyes with a canine eye wash. For example, an eye wash containing saline or Terra Septic eye drops are good choices.
You can also moisten a cotton ball with the eye wash or a contact lens solution like Bio True and rub it gently underneath your dog’s eyes. Dry shampoo can be used to wash your dog’s muzzle. You can also opt for a waterless shampoo option or a wet washcloth.
In addition, use 3% hydrogen peroxide. Apply it to a paper towel and dab it on, avoiding the eyes. A more DIY option is mixing one tablespoon of boric acid powder to one cup of distilled water. Boil the mixture. Once cool, keep it refrigerated and make a new batch of the solution weekly. After using this solution, comb through the hair and blow-dry it.
In some cases the hair around the dog’s eyes should be trimmed regularly. That’s something better left to a vet or dog groomer. Over grown hair around the eyes can cause eye irritation, which can ultimately cause excess tearing. Finally, keep all moist or rusty areas around the eyes dry.
Food Additives
Sometimes food additives can also help with tear staining. For example, adding one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar or buttermilk powder to their meals can help. Mild antibiotics prescribed by your veterinarian can also be used short term.
Can Coconut Oil Remove Dog Tear Stains?
Tear stains can be a nightmare if you don’t know everything you can use to combat them. Coconut oil is a natural antibiotic and contains anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also safe to use around your pet’s eyes.
Organic and unrefined coconut oil is the best. Non-organic and refined coconut oils may contain pesticides and other chemicals that are not safe for your dogs.
To use coconut oil, first, blot away any moisture or eye discharge there is, and make sure your dog’s fur and skin are as dry as possible. Massage a small amount of the oil into your dog’s skin using your hands. Apply it under the eyes and along the sides of their nose.
The coconut oil will then begin to repel the tears by creating a water-resistant barrier, and it won’t allow them to soak in and cause any staining. Additionally, the coconut oil also helps fight any bacteria and yeast buildup there is. It is a more natural solution to tear staining.
You can then use a soft cloth and rub the coconut oil into a dog tear stain. Repeat this process at least twice a day until all the staining is gone or until you no longer see any brown or reddish stains coming off onto the cloth. Make sure to avoid direct contact with the Chihuahua’s eyes.
