Chihuahuas are a relatively healthy breed but there are some health issues to be aware of.
Chihuahuas are prone to several eye problems because of their large, prominent eyes and delicate facial structure. Learn the most common Chihuahua eye issues, warning signs to watch for, treatment options, and when it’s time to see a vet.
The easiest way to get your Chihuahua to take medicine is to hide it in a soft, strong-smelling food like peanut butter or wet dog food. If that doesn’t work, you can place the pill at the back of their tongue and reward them immediately after to create a positive experience.
Chihuahuas shiver for several common reasons including being cold, excited, anxious, or due to their fast metabolism. While shaking is often normal for this small breed, frequent or unusual trembling can sometimes signal health issues like low blood sugar, pain, or illness.
Chihuahua dental care should include daily tooth brushing, regular veterinary cleanings, and dental chews or additives to reduce plaque buildup. Because Chihuahuas are prone to dental disease, consistent care is essential to prevent tooth loss, bad breath, and serious health problems.
Vision loss in dogs can happen suddenly or gradually and may be caused by conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal disease. Early signs include bumping into objects, hesitation in low light, and behavior changes. Some causes are treatable, so it’s important to see a vet quickly if you notice changes in your dog’s vision.
