I’m not sure if this Chi mom is just mean, or like the title said, she is teaching her babies to be able to fight. What do you think about this video?

It could be Barbie. I used to breed and show Yorkshire Terriers and I don’t ever remember the moms doing that to their babies. But it was 30 years ago so maybe I just forgot about it.
To me she seems mean. I have never seen a good mommy do that to her pups . I have seen a bad mommy do stuff like that. I hope those little guys survived. Not all dogs are good moms

I think that its terrible for the owner to let this mommy do this sort of thing her puppies…I’ve never seen this before and I think that this dog is just mean and doesn’t want to be bothered!!!!
Oh come on she is not going to kill them. They look like she has taken very good care of them to me. They are 6-8 weeks old and have no missing parts.
I would like if a Vet or a breeder would respond to this. I think she is being very MEAN 🙁
I used to breed Yorkies Gloria and my bitches never did that to their pups that I saw.
Chihuahuas are a different breed and temperment than Yorkies.

Interesting Jeane. I know my yorkies never did that either but then as someone pointed out in an earlier comment, yorkies are very different than chis.
I am a breeder of Chihuahuas. This dog isn’t being mean but do to several things I don’t believe the older dog in the video is a mom at all let alone the mom to these pups. I suspect this is a very young female, six to nine months of age and she is playing with the puppies. Due to her age and other factors she is being to rough in her play and she needs to be taught to be gentler when playing with babies. I have seen young dogs play with puppies in this manor and they do get to rough as they are young and inexperienced.

I agree. Tails are up and wagging. This is the age at which puppies learn from litter mates (or the babysitter!) to have a soft mouth (gentle bite for playing). They both tried to nurse unsuccessfully so I agree that she probably isn’t their mama. Pups that don’t have an opportunity for socialization with other dogs, cats, people, kids, etc. are the Chis that grow up to be nervous and aggressive. These pups look healthy and well nourished and their buddy looks like she is just playing. Also, that is a playful growl, not an expression of pain or fear.

Ok I watched the video. I’ve had several chi moms. None of them treated the puppies like this. I do believe she is more or less playing with them. She’s just being way to rough. She looks to be a puppy herself. I think gentle reprimands would be sufficient. Failing that, if the puppies are old enough to be away from her, then separate them.
I wonder if maybe she is just too young to be a mother and that’s why she’s so rough.

@Barbie, My chi had two litters and she never did that. She was always kind and loving to her puppies. She would even let the puppies breast feed when they started teething. At that moment I would have to separate them from her because they would literally draw blood from her while breast feeding and she would still let them. I stayed with one of her puppies which is now 9 and she still cleans and grooms her. Super cute and loving! 🥰
I’m not an expert but it seems like she is being extremely mean. Not all mothers are good moms.

I think the mama is being very aggressive to both of the pups. Maybe she was not mature enough to have pups and bee a mother. The pups should be taken away before she hurts or even kills them.

That was the first thing I was wandering about, how old is she? It seems that she wants to play, I know that in the first 12 weeks of a puppies life they have to learn puppy manners, but that is not very good manners. I really think she is a very young mom and it was her first heat as well, thus making her to immature.

I agree with Alex! I have 3 Chihuahuas. That is how they play. I think this is a young momma who wants to play and doesn’t realize how that she is playing too rough for the babies.
I agree the mother needs to be corrected before she hurts one of them seriously enough for a vet to have to see them.

Maybe when she was little another dog played with her like that, she does seem rough but is really not hurting them, I have 5 and my dame gave birth twice and was not with the puppies, even the daddy was gentle .maybe you have to reprimand her when she is playing too rough.

You do not say how old the puppies are, it could be that she is trying to wean them off of her, if that is not the case then she is just not a good mummy and you should try hand raising them, maybe she was bred to early and is not mature. You might want to show this video to your vet as well.
I agree Lynda. I was thinking maybe she is trying to wean them also but I still haven’t ever seen other Mamas being this mean while doing it. The pups do seem like they can stand up a little to her but I hope that doesn’t mean THEY will be mean also!! Hoping it’s because she’s too young but still there should be intervention to help them all to develop best temperament possible.
I have had a total of eight different moms giving birth over the last 10 years and never has one of them every treated their babies like this. If you don’t separate them they will grow up to be mean dogs.

How can you watch her be so mean to those babies and do nothing. They were crying out. All they want is to nurse. Take them away before she hurts them. How can you just sit and watch that?

I have recently raised a litter of chi and a litter of Yorkshire terrier and chi mixed. Never seen anything happen that rough with mom. She did play a little rough when the pups were about 5 weeks old. I would suggest keeping mom away from the pups until they are older unless supervised for feeding for a few more weeks. The pups look healthy so mama has obviously been feeding them okay.

Simple idiot owner who is filming and allowing this to happen! She is being mean. She keeps pushing the one out of the bed. And they are crying. No way is she playing with them. What is wrong with the owner? They should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen!!

I have 6 chi’s . One is my service dog, this mama is not playing she is being very aggressive the pups need to be removed from her and bottle fed. I would also get that mother fixed as soon as possible. The pic that is attached is Romeo he is my service dog. He is five years old and sweet to everyone and everything. I wish you all the luck in dealing with your situation.

Mom needs to be watched, Never have I seen a Mom PICK on her babies like this, I think things COULD get out of hand very easy , and Pups could be hurt ! Sooner they get weaned, and eating on there own, The Better ! Then YOU can get them away from MOM !
Have mother checked with the vet – it seems like she is in pain when they try to nurse. She may be reacting this way out of pain. Also, her tail is wagging most of the time until the pups try to nurse. I think that may be the problem.
Also, I have 2 chihuahuas and when they play/fight it looks way more aggressive than what it really is. I feel like if she wanted to hurt them she would. I really believe something is physically wrong with her – please take her to vet.

I really think shes being mean. She doesn’t know how to pick her babies up and they are snapping back at her. Mom and babies should be separated.
Used to be a farm girl,had every pet out there but reptiles.this is not normal.and what is worse is watching it happen for so long. teach momma to back off or just bring her the babies at feeding time. she’s going to hurt them. wrong,wrong, wrong !!!

Post partum depression as do humans. The mother dog is very agitated. She needs help. I don’t know why this video went on as long as it did. It really disturbed me. That one little pup has already been abused and is frightened and us learning bad behavior.

I couldn’t be taking pictures of my Chihuahua doing this. I think she is rejecting them. I hope the puppies were taken away. She was terribly rough with those babies. I Know the puppies are grown up now, that is if they made it, but still would like to know why the mother did this. I’ve never heard of this before and those puppies had to be bruised.
Some people have said this is typical behavior Dx but I used to breed and show Yorkies and I never saw it. I couldn’t be taking video of my dog doing this either. I’d be getting the puppies away from momma for at least a time out.

first id like to say that they are just adorable!! i wonder if the mom is an aggressive dog normally? at any rate i think id watch them very carefully and scold momma if she does this again. and if she does it again, remove the pups into a cage or something where momma cant get to them. only let them be together when they can be closely watched…if momma is letting them nurse they should be allowed to nurse…if not then seperate them permanetly. wish i could have one of the puppies..my obi looked just like the puppies..she was 12 1/2 when she died in oct 2014. she was my little angel..

I have raised Poodles and Chihuahuas, and I have never seen a momma treat her babies this way. It was terrible. Feel bad for puppies.

if the mother was hurting them thay would whimper and run and wee and be sc but they go back for m more and there’s no actual biteting. snaping .
and if mum was angry or upset she would walk away and leave them .

This is a Chi thing,quite normal. Playing,teaching them how to survive & also how to be submissive. Mama is being a little over obsessive though. She is not hurting the puppies,just being too rough. So best to step in & let her know.

Oh my goodness! I have a chi that looks almost exactly like this one and it’s breaking my heart watching her be so mean to those babies. BUT, I know my chi Sookie is a bit of a brat and I wouldn’t want her having babies because of her attitude. Yes, chi’s can seem rough when playing because Sookie and her brother Sam are rough when they goof off, but they are the same size. A little pup could suffer some serious damage when being rough housed with by the mom.

Our Chi mama does pretty much the same, but it is more of a teaching lesson as afterwards she loves up on her babies.

SHE IS NOT BEING MEAN. She is playing a little rough and maybe she needs another dog to play with. She looks to young to be having babies and these are prob her first. And no you do not need to take them away from her that would be very bad for her and the babies. They are not being hurt they are not yelping and screaming in pain so give her a break.
I don’t think I’d take them away either Becka, unless I could see she was hurting them. But I would definitely keep a close eye on her as she does seem rough with them.

I am devastated and have to talk about this. 2 weeks ago today, i was walking my little girl, Mollie on my property with a leash on. All of a sudden the neighbor’s German Shepherd came running and attacked both of us. He was primarily interested in killing my baby girl, which he did. She was only a yr and a half and the most perfect well behaved dog I’ve ever met. She was my constant companion and a complete love bug and has helped me through some tough times. I can’t believe this happened. I wake up with horrific images of her being attacked. I’ve learned that the attack dog was euthanized. This still doesn’t bring my Mollie back.
I can’t figure out how to forward s picture of my baby or i would. She was a fawn colored deer head and i wii never get over this.

Yeah, something that horrible, you definitely need to talk to a professional about it. I’m so sorry that happened. I had a German Shepherd attack me once out of the blue so they aren’t my favorite breed. They can be crazy.

I could only get through less than half the video! It was very upsetting to me. We’re supposed to train our pups with rewards and praise. NOT this way. NEVER! I’m still shaking from this video.

Nope, don’t think this is appropriate behavior of a Mom, dog, or human. Was hard to watch. The persons who adopt these puppy’s will be wondering why the little Chi’s are so aggressive, and hard to train. Which will cause the poor pups to be in a shelter someday. The owners should spay the mother after this litter to insure no more dogs learn this kind of behavior.
Yeah I tend to agree. I have had breeders tell me this normal behavior but I never saw it when I was a breeder.

A human should gently calm mama down. A little intervention is in order. I have video of my chi mix getting some hassle from her mama at about 5 or six weeks old. At 4 o’clock in the morning on the couch. Miss Polly was giving her pup lessons. Was really loud and fierce, maybe a little gentler with her shoving than your featured video.
I ended up getting 2 pups from the litter at 8 weeks. After my 2 ate they would tie into each other like pitbulls. Loud, but not too rough with the play attacks. Never yelped nor had injury. I would intervene quite a lot. Probably more than I needed to. I was a first timer with Chihuahuas !

I remember that video from another time and I feel sure that is meaness by the mama and it makes me feel bad for those puppys.
